Keeping in line with my theme of 'Literacy 2.0,' it is essential for me to introduce Dr. Nichole Pinkard who has broken digital ground for African American students in Chicago by creating the Digital Youth Network.
Dr. Pinkard paves the way in digital literacy by providing both virtual and physical spaces for the students in Chicago to discover and explore their interests. From music studios to gaming design software, there are several cutting edge tools in this safe after-school space. She has also provided a social media platform for the young contributors called Remix Learning where they can share and unite. Specializing in the development of city-level pedagogical digital media literacy ecologies and outcomes, Dr. Pinkard proves that anything is possible.
Dr. Pinkard's Current Program 'DYD' is aimed at empowering young women by tasking them with "nontraditional" projects that help break the stigma that they cannot succeed in fields such as design, programming, and circuitry.
I plan to make a gallant effort in following in the footsteps of this incredibly inspiring leader. If Dr. Pinkard has proven anything, it is that it is incredibly important for us as media specialists to reach out and bring opportunity to all students so that they may become literate digital nomads. There is simply no other way.
